Before You Travel
Everything you need to know to prepare for your unforgettable journey to Tanzania – from timing and visas to packing and cultural insights
Tanzania is a country that stays with you long after you leave
From wide savannahs and ancient wildlife migrations to tropical coastlines and vibrant local communities, Tanzania offers a rare combination of natural beauty and human warmth.
The people of Tanzania are known for their hospitality, kindness and calm way of life. A simple greeting, a smile, or taking a moment to connect often opens doors and creates meaningful encounters. At Milele Journeys, we believe travel is not only about seeing places – but about meeting people with respect, curiosity and humility.
People, Languages & Diversity
Tanzania is one of the most culturally diverse countries in Africa, home to over 120 ethnic groups and tribes. Each community has its own traditions, customs and, in many cases, its own local language. What unites this diversity is Swahili (Kiswahili), the national language spoken across the country and used in everyday life.
English is also widely spoken, especially in tourism, hospitality, education, and in larger towns and cities. This makes Tanzania easy to travel in for international visitors, while still offering deep and authentic cultural experiences.
Tanzania has a population of around 65 million people, many living in strong connection with their land, families and local communities. Respect for elders, hospitality and community values are deeply rooted throughout the country.
Learning a few Swahili words – such as “Jambo” (hello), “Asante” (thank you) or “Karibu” (welcome) – is always appreciated and often rewarded with a warm smile.
Respect & Cultural Awareness
- Always ask before taking photos of people, especially in villages, markets and rural areas.
- Dress respectfully, particularly in towns, villages and when visiting local communities. Covering shoulders and knees is appreciated
- Greetings matter – taking time to say hello shows respect.
- Tanzania is culturally rich and diverse; showing consideration for local customs creates more meaningful connections.
Currency & Payments
- The official currency is Tanzanian Shilling (TZS).
- US Dollars (USD) are widely accepted at lodges, safari camps and tourist establishments.
- Smaller shops, markets and tips are usually paid in TZS.
- ATMs are available in major towns, but limited in rural areas.
- Credit cards are accepted at some lodges and hotels, but not everywhere.
